    ByAlison Hayes October 4, 2019November 1, 2019

Once more, I am participating in A Chronic Voice’s monthly linkup. words: loving, affirming, waiting, parting, and persevering. I hope you guys aren’t sick of hearing about BiRequest or my migraine yet. I promise as soon as the migraine breaks, I’ll be able to do more researched work, but for now, I’m still trying to minimize…

Taking care of yourself during traumas, emergencies, and stressful times!

    ByAlison Hayes September 27, 2019November 1, 2019

The first thing to recognize is that whatever the issue is, you can not control all aspects and that managing yourself and your emotions are likely to take more energy than usual while managing the event will also take energy you likely don’t have. These pieces are going to leave anybody somewhere between tired and…

Toxic positivity vs realistic optimism: knowing the difference!

    ByAlison Hayes September 13, 2019September 12, 2019

I have seen and read a lot about the power of positivity and the importance of finding and maintaining a hopeful or optimistic view of life. I want to dig into that a bit, because I think that there’s an essential word missing from that suggestion: realistic. Having unrealistic hopes is self-destructive, as you are…

    ByAlison Hayes September 6, 2019September 4, 2019

Once more, I am participating in A Chronic Voice’s monthly linkup. words: researching, dating, finding, recounting, and recycling. Sometimes in life, you get hit with a perfect storm of stress – and sadly it looks like from mid-august well into September, I’m in that position. There are times when even if you are doing your best…

Striking the balance: financing my social life at the cost of unusual symptoms

    ByAlison Hayes August 2, 2019August 27, 2019

Once more, I am participating in A Chronic Voice’s monthly linkup. words: financing, exchanging, controlling, motivating, and capturing. I’m currently in an odd place in my life where several aspects of my life are going incredibly well, but I am also experiencing symptoms that have been and could be relatively debilitating. I’m working on keeping…

The advantages of being Somebody Else’s Problem!

    ByAlison Hayes July 19, 2019July 30, 2019

So, I grew up reading Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series(it was considered a trilogy until he wrote a few extra books).  You don’t need to be familiar with the series to get the point of this post, but I do want to make clear that the basic concept wasn’t originally mine, but instead lovingly…

Once more, I am participating in A Chronic Voice’s monthly linkup. Planning, Justifying, Analyzing, Starting, Concluding June is Pride month, and in New York City, the city-wide Pride parade is the last Sunday in June. This year(2019), there was another option: the Queer Liberation March. Heritage of Pride(HOP) runs the Pride Parade, and this year…

Using meditation to manage your symptoms

    ByAlison Hayes April 26, 2019May 17, 2022

So I have to say that meditation was not something that came naturally to me. It wasn’t something I did as a child, or something I got into as I grew up. In fact, I didn’t really try to meditate seriously until a couple of years ago. I wish I had started sooner, but am…

    Thoughts on scheduling your medications

    ByAlison Hayes March 15, 2019March 9, 2022

Most of us managing disabling conditions find ourselves also needing to take medications. I talk about medication management and drug interactions on other posts, but I wanted to take this moment to point out that your food needs and meal planning may have to take your medications into consideration as well. If you aren’t used…

    ByAlison Hayes March 8, 2019December 12, 2019

Once more, I am participating in A Chronic Voice’s monthly linkup. words: Failing, Succeeding, Pausing, Deciding & Thriving When I read those words, it made me think about one of the worst bouts of depression in my life.  There were a variety of powerful reasons why I was depressed, and a variety of powerful factors…

Alison Hayes

As a person with a sometimes-invisible illness that straddles neurology and psychiatry (Functional Neurological Disorder), I've dealt with a lot of the stigma surrounding physical and mental illnesses and both visible and invisible illnesses. I want to help other people with disabilities to regain perspective and control over their lives through manageable steps and make their lives better, one step at a time.
