    Should I see a psychologist?

    ByAlison Hayes April 6, 2018April 27, 2021

Psychologists treat psychological concerns or issues through conversation, observing your thoughts and actions, and helping you think through your reactions to events in your life.   They meet with their patients regularly, and it is an emotionally intimate relationship. They do not require a specific diagnosis but instead work with their clients to help them…

    Should I see a psychiatrist?

    ByAlison Hayes March 30, 2018February 22, 2022

A psychiatrist manages medication for mental-health concerns – so they are who you go to for medication prescriptions and for help and support in finding the right medication and dosage.   A psychologist, on the other hand, is trained to help people better understand and process their experiences. They do not prescribe or manage medications…

Plan your way to easier and tastier meals!

    ByAlison Hayes March 23, 2018April 26, 2021

Over 30% of households with a working-age disabled adult who cannot work do not regularly have enough food to meet their basic nutritional needs.   Think about that! Those of us who do have enough to eat need to pause and be grateful that how to prepare foods is the issue for us! And for…

    Evaluating your Doctor

    ByAlison Hayes March 10, 2018January 10, 2023

One of the idiosyncrasies of the American healthcare system(and there are many) is that it’s somewhere between difficult and impossible to get much information about how effective your doctor is.  There are some indicators out there, but it’s mostly second-hand information. For example, if your doctor was involved in a malpractice lawsuit, it’s generally a…

    Hi, I’m Alison!

    ByAlison Hayes March 4, 2018April 23, 2021

I was diagnosed with fine motor coordination issues at the age of 4, depression when I was 9 years old, and with conversion disorder(now better called Functional Neurological Disorder) when I was 23.  I spent my entire scholastic career being a special needs student and was frequently in honors and advanced placement classes.   Yes,…

As a person with a sometimes-invisible illness that straddles neurology and psychiatry (Functional Neurological Disorder), I've dealt with a lot of the stigma surrounding physical and mental illnesses and both visible and invisible illnesses. I want to help other people with disabilities to regain perspective and control over their lives through manageable steps and make their lives better, one step at a time.
