How will moving affect my disability benefits?

    ByAlison Hayes June 14, 2019November 5, 2019

One of those huge changes in life is moving from one home to another. When you’re living with a disability, the need for accommodations may require you to move for your own safety, or changes in your financial situation may require you to move to different(often less expensive) housing. Sometimes, some of us may even…

Can you get SSI and SSDI?

    ByAlison Hayes May 10, 2019September 18, 2023

It is possible to get both Supplementary Security Income(SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance(SSDI), but you probably do not want to be in the position of needing to be eligible for both.  The reason I say this is because while SSDI is based upon disability and work history, SSI is a program specifically for people who…

What is SSDI and how does it work?

    ByAlison Hayes February 15, 2019March 10, 2025

SSDI stands for Social Security Disability Insurance(It is also sometimes shortened to SSD), which is one of two programs to support people who are too disabled to work. SSDI is specifically for people who have enough of a work history that they would be eligible for social security benefits when they retire. This program is…

How filing for disability hurts you(and why you need to do it anyway)

    ByAlison Hayes January 25, 2019May 17, 2022

I’m not trying to be discouraging or to tell you not to apply.   I have been supported by SSDI(social security disability insurance) for well over 15 years, and I know that my quality of life would be much worse if I were not on this program.   What I do want to do is…

Can you travel while on disability?

    ByAlison Hayes August 10, 2018July 13, 2021

Traveling on disability is simultaneously an attractive idea and a serious challenge.  The idea of not needing to live in one place and developing a nomadic lifestyle feels appealing to me, and I am sure to many others as well.   Once you’ve gotten over the initial shock of your condition, and once you have…

    Disability and marriage rules

    ByAlison Hayes July 27, 2018November 23, 2020

We are in the midst of wedding season.  Weddings are generally beautiful affairs where two people commit to one another, announce their love to the world, and celebrate their relationship with family and friends.  I attended two weddings this year, one for my cousin in Ohio, and another where a long-time friend of Al’s got…

Can I work and still receive disability?

    ByAlison Hayes July 6, 2018February 8, 2022

I tried to stay focused on my game.  Really, I did.  But every couple of minutes, I would scan the room and double-check what number they were helping now.  I knew the time would pass more quickly if I could lose track, but there were a lot of sounds by a lot of people.  The…

Can you work while applying for disability?

    ByAlison Hayes June 15, 2018September 5, 2019

I was fortunate enough to never need to ask that question. When I applied, I was physically unable to work due to symptoms and had lost two jobs in the previous three months.  My parents helped me through the wait financially, and I focused on my treatments and healing process.  I did not even think…

Maintaining mental health while filing for disability

    ByAlison Hayes June 1, 2018May 4, 2022

Filing for disability put me in a depressive funk that left me exhausted, and the process of filing the paperwork literally took me weeks because I couldn’t work on it for more than ten to fifteen minutes at a time before I was physically unable to continue.  Filing for disability, in itself, was an emotional…

As a person with a sometimes-invisible illness that straddles neurology and psychiatry (Functional Neurological Disorder), I've dealt with a lot of the stigma surrounding physical and mental illnesses and both visible and invisible illnesses. I want to help other people with disabilities to regain perspective and control over their lives through manageable steps and make their lives better, one step at a time.
