    So, I’m writing a book!

    ByAlison Hayes September 19, 2024September 19, 2024

Thriving While Disabled: Navigating Disability Finances I know that I haven’t written another post in way too long. I do apologize for this, but it’s been for a variety of good reasons. But at the most basic, life happened in a way that drew my focus away from writing posts, and I had less time…

Returning to work after getting on disability: protecting your health

    ByAlison Hayes September 23, 2022September 22, 2022

For many of us who become disabled, the recognition and acceptance process isn’t easy, and all too often, employment and disability are inextricably linked. For many of us, part of becoming disabled is losing our employment. The grief and loss of becoming disabled is often entangled deeply with the loss of income, and often the…

    Should I apply for disability?

    ByAlison Hayes May 14, 2021September 9, 2022

It can be a hard decision to make. There are actually two different programs that are often referred to as disability, and while you don’t need to choose which to apply for (they share the same application and are both run by the Social Security Administration), it is important to understand what they are and…

I hope to answer some of the most common questions claimants ask in regards to filing for disability. But first, let me introduce myself. My name is Tatiana Froes. I am a disability attorney practicing disability…

    Lessons learned from 2020

    ByAlison Hayes January 1, 2021December 31, 2020

So it’s once again time for A Chronic Voice’s monthly linkup. This month’s words are beginning, symbolizing, enduring, revealing, gracing. As it is January, I’m going to write about the concepts these words bring up for me and what lessons I’ve learned from 2020. Beginning the new year with new medication coverage The headache started in…

Can you get disability if you have FND?

    ByAlison Hayes December 4, 2020November 20, 2023

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a relatively common (though rarely properly diagnosed) condition. I was diagnosed in 2003 when it was still being called Conversion Disorder (and labeled as a mental illness rather than a neurological condition). I want to be really clear about this: the condition you have (your diagnosis) is less impactful on…

Being your own boss on disability: mastering your destiny

    ByAlison Hayes October 16, 2020July 21, 2022

As I’ve mentioned on previous posts, you can work while on SSI or SSDI. There are programs, like Ticket to Work and Vocational Rehab programs that can help with the process. However, the reality is that while they can give you information about working, they often are only prepared to help you with calculations related…

What does it mean to “go on disability”?

    ByAlison Hayes May 8, 2020May 5, 2023

The honest answer is that there are a lot of possible meanings. The most typical at this point is to receive Social Security Disability Insurance benefits(SSDI) or Supplemental Security Insurance(SSI), but there really are a lot of additional types of “disability” benefits, each of which has its own set of rules, regulations, and durations. This…

Heat and energy assistance from the government: LIHEAP

    ByAlison Hayes November 8, 2019August 15, 2022

Al and I are in the process now of getting our Low-Income Heat and Energy Assistance Plan(LIHEAP) renewed. Since we are getting it done right now, I figured it was a good time to talk about this program. What is LIHEAP? LIHEAP exists in some form in every state but is usually managed on the…

How does Medicaid work and how do I get it?

    ByAlison Hayes October 18, 2019September 18, 2023

So Medicare and Medicaid are two terms that a lot of people seem to mix up on occasion. They are both important insurance programs, but they are run and managed through different levels of government. They also provide different types and degrees of coverage, and the process to get them is different, as is the…

Alison Hayes

As a person with a sometimes-invisible illness that straddles neurology and psychiatry (Functional Neurological Disorder), I've dealt with a lot of the stigma surrounding physical and mental illnesses and both visible and invisible illnesses. I want to help other people with disabilities to regain perspective and control over their lives through manageable steps and make their lives better, one step at a time.
